A1C: 7.5

curls 3x10 w/40lb pushups 3x10, Squats 3x25, Situps 3x30

The A1C is a bit high but down from 10.4 in October, so I'm very pleased with that number. Credit a lot of running in the last 3 months for that improvement.

Had to arise at 4 am to meet the carpool going up to run Brighton Loops. I thought it was pretty nutty -- all that work just to train at 9000 feet. But what do I know? I'm just a neophyte. The runamok group has been doing this for a while.

The snow storm was great! Pretty as a postcard. I saw a lot of  Christina's friends that she always talks about: Andrea, Craig, Coach Bill, and ... Alicia? -- the one who has all the BYU energy..And of course, T1 and T2.

They ran about 9-10 loops while I ran 6. Each loop was 3/4 mile. It was actually pretty fun and a nice change from the usual 10 mile, slow pace run that I do on Saturdays.

6x0.75 miles

When runners passed me they said, "Looking Good!". And coach Bill said, "Someday you will be as sick as the rest of us!". So these are very friendly and motivating People. I can see why Christina loves running with them so much.

Race: river woods 10 mile (10 Miles) 00:02:06

Great route. It's more pleasant running the whole thing down hill (as opposed to half up-hill on the 10K two weeks ago). The first 3 miles or so had a perfect downhill grade. I pretty much coasted. At that point I decided to go for my best time on the first 10K portion of the race.

At about mile 5, I started feeling tired but pushed for a  good 10K time of 1:14. (PR) Then my times really dropped off -- from about 12 minute miles to 13 minute miles. Mile 8 and 9 were pretty tough. Mile 10 was faster since I was just thinking about finishing as quick as possible to get it over with.

I can't over-state how fun it was  and how great I felt for the rest of the day. My first 10 mile run and a good preview of how my 1/2 marathon will be in August. I just need to keep running long races on Saturday to build up my stamina. Plus drop as many lbs. as possible.

I'm pretty stiff and sore but not injured (thank goodness)

2 miles of gentle pickups 11:55, 12:30

I'm going to try more of these gentle pickups as a way to boost my speed. The 200 yard repeats are just a little too jarring on my frame and  I often get joint (hip, knee and ankle) pain for days afterward.

These gentile pickups are convenient because I can do them anytime close to my house and not have to go to a track. I hope it works. I think if I can get that 1 mile time well under 11 minutes, then I should be able to reach all of my goals this year.

2.9 miles 35:20, plenty of heat today - 97. Smeagol didn't beat me to the finish this time, but he is doing the ultimate 10K training plan and is quite depleted of energy.

1 mile of gentile pickups. I did about 6 GPs and got a time of 10:55. I think that is the first time I've broken an 11 minute mile! It took too long to reach this milestone. My first sub 10 minute mile will  come sooner.

10 miles, slow and easy. Ran into my bro, Ray. He jogged with me for a couple miles and told me all about his daughter Rachelle who lives in Iowa, just had a baby and had to stay temporarily with her brother in Wisconsin due to flooding... you know... jog talk.

2.9 miles with Smeagol. I struggled mightily today mostly because of a stiff left calf. I didn't notice it until I started picking up the pace. It caused me to stop and stretch a lot and walk part of the course. I must have strained it during the hike yesterday. I consentrated on running in such a way that that calf got stretched on each step -- seemed to help.

I hope it get better quick. I spent a little extra time stretching after the run.

I tried to run 14 miles but ran into a couple of problems.

1) American Fork canyon is just not good for running: not enough shoulder and too many fast cars and bicycles. After getting about 1 mile away from the visitor center (6 miles away from home) I dodged a fast bicycle and decided it was enough and turned around.

 2) My left calf stiffened up and my right hip started causing me a lot of pain. So I had to walk (actually limp) the last 3 miles home. It's a little discouraging wondering how I'm ever going to finish the half marathon, let alone a full marathon next year.

The calf should heal up with more time, but the hip has bothered me for years so I don't know how it's ever going to get better.

I'll just keep running and hope for the best. I know everyone else struggles with pains now and then.
